Natural gas is delivered to homes through pipes that run underground, through walls, and behind appliances. Most of that piping is out of sight, which means a leak is usually detected by its effects rather than by looking at the pipe.
The nine signs below cover what a gas leak does to the air, to the ground, to appliance flames, and to the people and animals in the house. They are grouped by sense because that is how they present in real life.
Natural gas is colorless and odorless in its natural state. Utilities add a chemical called mercaptan specifically so that a leak can be detected by smell. Mercaptan produces a sharp sulfur odor most people describe as rotten eggs.
The odor was added after a school explosion in Texas in 1937 killed hundreds of people, in a building where a gas leak had gone unnoticed because there was nothing to smell. Odorization has been standard practice since.
One point of confusion comes up often in Baton Rouge homes. A rotten egg smell coming from a drain or from hot water only is usually not natural gas. Hydrogen sulfide from a water heater anode rod, or sewer gas from a dry drain trap, produce a similar odor. The distinction is covered further down, but it is never the thing to work out while standing in a house that smells of gas. Leave first and sort out the source afterward.
The clearest indicator. A leak inside the home produces a smell that gets stronger as you approach the source and weaker as you move away. It may be constant or it may come and go as air moves through the house.
Faint and intermittent still counts. A small leak produces a smell that appears only when a door opens or the air handler cycles. That is not a reason to wait and see.
Gas escaping under pressure makes noise. Near an appliance connection the sound is a soft hiss. At a larger break in a supply line it can be a whistle or a roar loud enough to hear from another room.
Sound carries information about scale. A hiss suggests a small leak at a fitting. A roaring sound indicates a substantial break and a correspondingly larger volume of gas entering the space.
An underground gas line leak displaces oxygen in the soil and kills plant roots. The result is grass that browns and dies in a strip or circle while the lawn around it stays green, with no drought, no chemical spill, and no obvious explanation.
The pattern is what identifies it. A straight line of dead grass running across a yard often traces the path of the buried service line. Shrubs or a tree declining on one side with healthy growth elsewhere can point to the same thing.
Gas escaping from a buried line rises through saturated soil and surfaces as bubbles. In a puddle, a ditch, or a low spot after rain, this appears as a steady stream of small bubbles with no visible source.
This sign matters more in South Louisiana than in most regions. Ground here is wet often, drainage ditches are common, and the high water table means soil stays saturated long after rain. Atmos Energy specifically flags bubbling water in flooded areas as a leak indicator in its Louisiana storm guidance.
A pressurized underground leak pushes gas up through the soil hard enough to disturb loose dirt at the surface. Dust or small debris appears to be blowing from a spot on the ground on a still day.
This indicates a leak with meaningful pressure behind it, which usually means the main or the service line rather than a small fitting.
A properly burning natural gas flame is blue and steady. A flame burning yellow, orange, or lifting away from the burner indicates the fuel to air mixture is wrong.
This sign needs care in how it is read. A yellow flame does not by itself mean the gas line is leaking. It means the appliance is burning incompletely, which is a combustion problem, and incomplete combustion is what produces carbon monoxide. Either way it is a reason to have the appliance and its gas connection inspected.
Related signs at the appliance include soot or dark staining around a burner or vent, and unusual condensation on nearby windows while the appliance runs.
Natural gas is not poisonous in the way carbon monoxide is. It causes harm by displacing oxygen in an enclosed space. As the concentration climbs, the available oxygen drops, and the body responds the way it does to any oxygen deficit.
Common effects include headache, lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
The detail that separates this from ordinary illness is location. Symptoms that ease within an hour of leaving the house and return after coming back are pointing at the building, not at a virus. When more than one person in the household has the same symptoms on the same schedule, that pattern is stronger still.
Animals occupy the lower part of a room and have faster metabolisms, so they often show effects before people do. A pet that becomes lethargic, unsteady on its feet, disoriented, or loses interest in food without an obvious cause can be responding to something in the air.
Multiple pets affected at once, or a pet that improves outdoors and declines indoors, follows the same pattern that makes human symptoms meaningful.
Gas escaping from a leak is still metered. A bill that rises with no change in usage, no new appliance, and no seasonal explanation means gas is going somewhere other than the burners.
This is the slowest of the nine signs and the one most often dismissed. It rarely appears alone. Paired with a faint odor, a patch of dead grass, or symptoms in the household, a rising bill with no explanation supports the rest.

What not to do
They are different hazards with different causes, different warning signs, and different detectors. Confusing them is dangerous because the precaution for one does not protect against the other.

A carbon monoxide alarm does not detect a natural gas leak, and a gas detector does not detect carbon monoxide. Homes with gas appliances benefit from both. The National Fire Protection Association publishes NFPA 715 as the standard covering fuel gas detectors in residential buildings.
The two can appear together. An appliance burning incompletely, the situation described in sign 6, produces carbon monoxide while also indicating something wrong with the gas supply or venting.
Once the utility has checked the property and found no gas leak, a persistent sulfur smell usually traces to one of two plumbing sources.
Hot water only. Sulfate reducing bacteria in the water supply react with the magnesium anode rod inside a water heater and produce hydrogen sulfide. The smell appears at hot taps and not cold ones. Flushing the tank and changing the anode rod resolves it. This falls under water heater service.
From a drain. A dry P-trap or a cracked vent lets sewer gas into the room. The smell is strongest near a specific fixture and often comes and goes with weather or water use. Guest bathrooms and floor drains that go unused are the usual sources, and this connects to the drain and sewer system rather than to gas piping.
Neither of these is a reason to delay evacuating when a gas smell appears. Rule them in after the utility has ruled a gas leak out, not before.
It depends on the size of the leak and how enclosed the space is. A significant leak in a small closed room can produce headache and dizziness within minutes. A slow leak in a ventilated house may take days or weeks before anyone connects their symptoms to the building.
The explosion hazard follows its own timeline. Natural gas ignites when it reaches a concentration between roughly 5 and 15 percent of the air in a space. Below that range it is too lean to ignite, above it too rich. A leak filling an enclosed room passes through that window regardless of whether anyone feels unwell.
Yes. A small leak in a poorly ventilated space produces recurring headaches, fatigue, nausea, and trouble concentrating that are easily attributed to stress, poor sleep, or a lingering virus. The tell is that symptoms track with time spent in the building and ease when the household is away.
No. A brief odor when a burner is first lit or a pilot ignites is normal and clears in seconds. A smell that lingers, returns, or is noticeable in a room with nothing running is not normal and warrants a call to the utility.
Both, in sequence, and the division matters for knowing who to call.

The utility’s responsibility generally ends at the meter. Piping downstream of the meter, running through the house to appliances, is the property owner’s responsibility, which is why the repair itself goes to a plumber licensed for gas work rather than to Atmos. That repair falls under gas line repair and replacement.
Gas piping is one of the systems checked during a whole house plumbing inspection, which is worth scheduling when buying an older home or after any event that may have disturbed buried lines.
Three regional conditions put stress on gas piping in this area.
Expansive clay soil. Louisiana clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. That seasonal movement shifts buried lines and works at joints and fittings over years. It is the same soil behavior that damages sewer lines and foundations.
Storm activity. Uprooted trees pull buried lines. Debris damages meters and above ground piping. Atmos issues specific guidance after storms for this reason, including leaving the area and calling from a safe distance if a meter is damaged or a line is exposed.
Flooding and saturated ground. Standing water around gas appliances is a hazard in its own right. Atmos guidance is not to operate appliances that have been underwater, and to have them inspected by a qualified professional before use.
There is also a rule that applies year round. Call 811 before any digging, including fence posts, tree planting, and landscaping. Striking a buried gas line is one of the more common causes of residential leaks and it is entirely preventable. If a line is nicked or scraped even slightly, Atmos advises calling 911 and their emergency number, because minor damage can weaken a pipe and lead to a leak later.
Will a carbon monoxide detector alert me to a natural gas leak?
No. Carbon monoxide alarms detect only carbon monoxide. Detecting a natural gas leak requires a separate methane or natural gas detector. Homes with gas appliances benefit from having both.
Is natural gas heavier or lighter than air?
Natural gas is lighter than air and rises, collecting near ceilings and in upper rooms. Propane is heavier than air and settles low, pooling in basements and floor level spaces.
Does the gas company charge to check for a leak?
